![]() Like a good detective story, the plots of Monogatari’s arcs still function dramatically in its own non-chronological order, because clear motivations exist within the context of the arc and the action follows those motivation. In its current state, the Monogatari series exists as a large-scale, multi-vector juxtaposition of events and perspectives that together, eventually form moving emotional truths. On the other hand, Kizumono is itself important framing for O wari because Kizumono is where the damaged people caused by those backstories were the most disastrous, people that can then be contrasted with the future selves that resolve those issues. ![]() Owarimonogatari reveals to us how Araragi and Shinobu got to be so damaged by time of Kizumono. Yet, although events appear different to us depending on the order in which we place them, all their presentations are equally valid as narrative experiences. Interactions are differently charged with knowledge of previous heartbreak, future loss, or unknown changes elsewhere. The result of this is that the emotional charge of virtually every arc changes, depending on when you are viewing them. One layer of meaning comes from actions past, the other from that of future consequence. ![]() In the same way that other perspectives reveal biases and blind spots inherent to Araragi’s vision, the full knowledge of his circumstances reveals a double nature to his experience. ![]() We in turn, are aware of the meaning events in their future give to current action, while they are not. ![]() Although the perspectives of their protagonists are privileged, we are not in custody of the memories they have gained by following their own chronology. There are two disjointed sets of information. The arcs of Monogatari were published as light novels and released as anime in an order not in sync with the chronology its characters experience.
